Colchester Stairlift Grant: How It Works
A non-means-tested council grant can pay for a stairlift. Here is who qualifies, how to apply and what to expect.
Quick answer: Colchester City Council offers a Stairlift Grant that is not means tested. You need an occupational therapist assessment through Essex County Council first. Homeowners repay nothing on the first £5,000, with a capped, interest-free charge above that for 10 years.
Who can get the Colchester stairlift grant?
The council funds a stairlift when it is needed to reach essential rooms such as a bedroom or bathroom, when the home and the stairlift are suitable for the user, and when funds are available without affecting mandatory Disabled Facilities Grant money. An occupational therapist decides eligibility and recommends the equipment.
How to apply, step by step
- Ask for an assessment. Call Essex County Council on 0345 603 7630 (adults) or 0345 603 7627 (children and families), or use their website.
- The OT visits. They look at how you manage the stairs and recommend the right equipment. Read what the OT visit involves.
- Get your quote. We supply a written survey and quote the council can use.
- Grant decision and fitting. If approved, the stairlift is fitted and the condition of grant applies.

Repayment rules for homeowners
The first £5,000 of the grant never needs repaying. Anything above that becomes an interest-free charge on the property for 10 years, capped at £10,000. It is repayable only if the property is sold or transferred within that period. After 10 years the charge is removed.
Tenants and housing association residents
If you rent from Colchester Borough Homes, contact them first on 01206 282971. Other tenants should talk to their landlord and the OT. See stairlifts for council and housing association tenants.
If you do not get a grant
Funds are limited and the council decides each case. If a grant is not available you still have good options: 0% VAT relief, a reconditioned stairlift from £1,785, or short-term rental. Check your likely cost on the cost calculator and read paying for a stairlift without a grant.
Grant questions answered
Is the Colchester stairlift grant means tested?
No. Colchester City Council says its Stairlift Grant is non-means-tested, so eligible residents do not contribute towards the cost, subject to funds being available.
Do I have to repay the grant?
Homeowners do not repay the first £5,000. Any amount above that becomes an interest-free charge on the property for 10 years, capped at £10,000, and is repayable if you sell or transfer the property within those 10 years. After 10 years the charge is removed.
